2007-May-23 - Pain Depression
When it comes to depression, the role that chronic, physical pain has on this illness is often seriously underestimated.
In fact there have been relatively few studies on this topic and little supporting evidence offered while one would think the conclusion would be a matter of common sense and reason.
Depression alone can be a serious illness: combining it with chronic, physical pain can be a crushing combination. It is important to watch loved ones suffering from both very closely. Do your best to ease the feelings of isolation by making yourself available to them on a regular basis.

2007-May-22 - Acne Sufferers Support Group
Even though acne sufferers know that their friends also suffer from acne, it still sometimes makes them feel isolated and alone. The unsightly zits that pop up when they are least wanted, like just before a hot date, can cause extreme despair and frustration. Worse still is that the lack of self esteem many adolescents suffer from is often made worse by what they see in the mirror during an acne attack.
There may be worse cases of acne, but for the sufferer, theirs is always the worst. If your teen suffers from the moodiness and despair brought on by acne, it might be a good idea to allow them to find an acne support group.
These days, this would usually be an online forum where teens can post questions about treatment and the likely duration of their acne and get quick answers from one or more specialists in the field. It could be a chat room where they could make friends with other suffers and find out for sure that they are not only not the only ones to suffer from acne, but that others also feel the same way about it as they do.
Make sure that you find the right one for your child. It doesn’t pay to be casual about chat rooms because you don’t know who is likely to be lurking there, but if you can get in first and check out that the site is of good reputation, it will ease your mind and keep your child safe.

2007-May-15 - Where Are The Zits Coming From?
Basically acne is centered around the tiny hair follicles on the face.
An oil gland (called the sebaceous gland) is in the hair follicle: occasionally dead cells will clog the follicle, and bacteria that are always present on your face begin to multiply and feed on the oils (called sebum) and dead cells. This all causes swelling of the follicle, and infection sets in with the multiplication of the bacteria, thus the sore red spot that makes you go running for the acne treatment aisle at the grocery store.
This all happens deep within the follicle. Surface acne treatments can only do so much to prevent these clogs. In fact, if you wash with acne treatments that use harsh chemicals or abrasives (like walnut shells, or anything that feels like little particles in the soap) your skin will actually produce more oil, because it is dried out- this can cause even worse acne than you had in the first place!
Cleansing on the outside will help keep the bacteria at bay but the causes of acne may go deeper...

2007-May-8 - Natural Acne Treatment
Many people think of acne as something suffered solely by hormone laden teenagers, but many adults can attest that that's simply not the case! At least eighty percent of adults suffer from acne at some point after leaving their teens, and many adults suffer recurring bouts of acne well into their thirties and even forties.
Not only can acne be disfiguring and embarrassing, but most acne medications were created with young skin in mind, and simply don't suit the skin of older people (many acne treatments are too drying, as they treat "oily" skin; although many acne sufferers actually have so-called normal or even dry skin).
So what is a mature acne sufferer to do? One excellent place to start is by looking at natural acne remedies. Many are just as effective as their over the counter or prescription counterparts, but are often much more gentle and far less likely to irritate sensitive skin.
Many practitioners of herbal medicine recommend both internal and external treatments for acne. Acne is often a symptom of internal discord in the body, and thus treating the skin does little to solve the problem. Knowing this, it makes sense to heal the whole body rather than simply focus on the skin, as many other medications do.

2007-May-2 - Are Medications For Depression All Hype?
If you are one of the millions of people who suffer from depression and are just now getting to the doctor for treatment, you might be surprised at the number of prescription medications that are available, like Citalopram (Celexa), and you might be a little worried about them.
Antidepressant drugs work in the brain, restoring the chemical imbalances that are causing your depression. This might be just the jump-start your system needs to beat the depression that is pulling you down.
Remember that you need to take each and every dose that you are prescribed. Do not stop taking this medication just because you feel better or do not feel that you need it anymore. Keep on track and inform your doctor of any changes in your depression.

2007-May-1 - Girls, Puberty And Acne
Girls go through many physical and psychological changes during puberty.
During puberty girls experience an increased likelihood and severity of acne from hormonal changes in the body and increased oil secretions in the skin.
Puberty is often a difficult time and teenage acne only adds to the difficulty. During puberty girls usually experience increased irritability, mood swings, and feelings of low self esteem. Even girls who have been very sure of themselves may suffer from low self esteem when puberty sets in. These changes may be even more severe in the girl also suffers from acne.
The changes experienced during puberty can take a mental and physical toll on girls. The onset of acne certainly makes these changes even harder to deal with.
It is a good idea to visit with a dermatologist if the acne can not be controlled with over-the-counter medications. A dermatologist will understand the changes that are associated with acne and will be able to offer advice and treatment programs.
It's also important to be understanding and offer support to girls as they go through the difficult time of puberty.

2007-Apr-24 - Boys, Puberty And Acne
Many people think that boy's puberty and acne are not a cause for concern but boys might disagree. Acne can have an effect on the self esteem of the young man and makes this transitional time harder to deal with.
It is important for the boy to keep his face clean. There are many products on the market that can be used for acne cleansing if acne pimples are a problem.
Sometimes puberty and stress can combine to make acne even worse. Find the causes of stress and work on reducing or eliminating it. The acne itself can lead to stress and then you have a vicious cycle. A boy during puberty does not need the added stress of acne.
If the boy is shaving try using different types of razors. Sometimes an electric razor is the best but for other boys a safety razor will be more comfortable for shaving with acne.
Boys during puberty need a lot of support and understanding. Learning the best way to combat an acne condition will help a boy during puberty so that he can cope with all the other changes that he is going through.

2007-Apr-19 - Will The Lap Band Endanger Your Health?
The Lap Band was designed as a surgical diet to reduce the size of your stomach. This surgical diet is intended only for morbidly obese people who have failed at other forms of diet. Don't even think about it unless your health is significantly threatened by your weight. Lap Bank surgery is typically recommended when the health of the patient is at risk due to their weight. The Lap Band procedure can be a viable alternative for the morbidly obese. It will reduce the size of the stomach, thus, allowing the dieter to feel full and not eat as much.

2007-Apr-11 - Depression Self Help - Moderate Depression
Moderate depression is a lot more serious than being mildly depressed. A few nights out with friends or taking a cake decorating class will not do it.
This challenge will require you to evaluate everything you are and everything you do. You need to learn a new life.
As adults, we are told that the only acceptable way to live is to constantly be pushing ourselves to bigger and better things. While this may sound good in a motivational speech, it has no place in your recovery from moderate depression.
You are okay as you are. Read more about how to deal with moderate depression >>
